20th - 27th February 2011

LOL. this blog is long term overdue. But I have kept this drafted in a word document for the past week or so.

Wow, this past week has gone by way too fast. And I’m not even sure if I remember most of what’s happened. But it was worth it all, it was a great week. I’m not too sure where I was up to from my last blog. Anyways, on Sunday, I met up with another gap student, we went shopping on Oxford Street, then at night, went out to the local pub down the street. Got a few cocktails, then the pub closed. Lol, so we moved to another one down the road. We got ID’ed, but they didn’t let us in because apparently “Drivers licences aren’t a legitimate ID”, so we were like, “ok fine....” –moves somewhere else – and the pool & bar pub/bar was where we stayed for an hour or so. We were also with another girl who stays at the hostel. Also met a few Australians, but they were from Adelaide and Perth. Haha, one of them was high, it was funny meeting him. Kinda awkward when he broke one of the glass bottles in the bar. A and I got a bit bored, so we decided to go to another club/bar. The other girl (from the hostel) that was with us, went back because she had work the next day. So we caught a cab, and asked the driver to take us to the nearest club that was open (note that this is about 2.45AM). He took us to a club called “fabric”, which was open until 6AM (lol this was on a Sunday night too) and was only ₤10 entry. It was an alright club, the music wasn’t too bad, but also wasn’t danceable to. And most of the people there were guys. Haha, felt so weird. There were barely any girls, and the toilets were shared. There were no male or female toilets. We meet a few guys. It was fun just sitting there and watching people talk/dance/etc with each other, and then wondering what their motives are. And it’s more than what people think or see. I mean, there are legit nice people in clubs too, I don’t really see how clubbing can be that bad, or looked down on. But whatever, you only live once, so I guess, just make the most of it. I think we left the club around 4 or 5 in the morning. Ahhaa. Though, I’m pretty sure that club would’ve been better on a different night.

We woke up on Monday morning around 10am, and went shopping again, on Oxford Street. We met up with another gap student, although we only stayed with her for a few hours of shopping. We headed back to the hostel and just chilled there for a bit. Another gap student wanted to meet up as well, I mean like really keen to hit the nightlife. Lol. It was funny though, because we went out too early, and got to the club first. How embarrassing. But before that, we had dinner at cafe rouge. Oh my gosh, it was just so amazing! Anyways, yeah, we went to a place called O-Bar. Ahhaha, walked in and then walked straight out, because there were way too many ‘older’ people there, and by old, I mean like 30 year olds and over. So yep, that was pretty awkward. We ended up at Club49, a little bit near Soho. The club seemed alright, the only problem was that we were there way too early. So basically, when the music started, and no one else was there, we left to go back to the hostel. So that night was an early one. Although the next day, we woke up early, then slept in, and woke up around 4pm? Went out to the groceries, and only bought a few drinks, ice cream (Ben and Jerrys, omg it’s soooooo nice) and crisps LOL. Pigged out back at the hostel, and contemplated for a few hours whether we should go out or not. And we were still thinking even up until 11pm. We finally decided to go to Belushi’s which was just down the road. It got to about quater to 1 in the morning, we walked down London Bridge, to the nearest bus stop, and caught a double decker to Piccadilly. As soon as we got off the bus, a clubbing tour guide kinda man directed us to the nearest club, though we got to choose which one to go it. It was only ₤10 entry. Ahha, oh and if I didn’t already mention, we didn’t know that we were going to be clubbing on this night, so we weren’t so dressed up, and by that I mean, no make up, no dresses. Ahah. Just jeans and a simple top. And ironically, it was one of the best nights so far.

The next day (Wednesday), A went back to Tring (where her placement is), she works in a performing arts school. We went there, omg, it was huge. We went back to her house that she’s living in for this year. It was a pretty good one too. Two storey, although it was shared amongst the other gap students and one teacher. I think we ordered pizza for dinner on that night, and then around 9pm, I headed back to London. I’m pretty sure I had an early night ? I can’t remember. But the next day, I went on the free walking tour, that takes us around London. It was really good, and worth the time as well, especially since it was free. But I did tip the guy in the end. Ahha. We went pretty much to all the Royal places in London, like the Wellington Arch, Buckingham palace, etc. Our last stop for the tour was at Westminister. And from there we all dispersed. Lol. I met this really nice New Yorker, who is also kinda on a gap year, but she goes back to the States for the Army in April. She was so awesome, and was only 21 years old. On that night, I went on a pub crawl. I met these really nice New Yokers, and also this girl from Boston, who’s working for documentaries in the Netherlands. Haha, amazing thing I learnt about her, is that she plays Quidditch, as a legit sport. J.K Rowling created the game when she wrote the Harry Potter books, but these bunch of Americans decided to make it a legit sport, with brooms and stuff. I wasn’t too sure on how they work and stuff, but yeah. That was the most interesting thing I found out on that pub crawl. Ahah. I forgot what the clubs were called, but that night was good, one – because of the good company, and two – because we went to the clubs that were actually opened. Ahha. I got back to the hostel, probably around 4 or 5 in the morning. Omg. Even if the sites are closed (like the London Eye, Westminister, etc) they look so amazing at night, I guess it was because of the lights. Ahah.

On Friday, I went to the markets- Camden markets and Covent Garden. Everything was so cheap. I can’t believe how much I bought. I was contemplating on going on the ₤15 walking tour, or the ₤5 pub crawl that afternoon/evening. So I ended up on the pub crawl, but left early, because it wasn't as fun as the one I had on the previous night. I headed back to Borough, and just chilled at the bar/pub at the hostel. Met a lot of people. Few French guys, Spanish girls, and English locals. It was quite a good night, seeing as I checked back into my hostel really really early/but late in the morning.

On Saturday midday, I met up with A again, did a bit of shopping and what not. Headed to her hostel, and then just chilled for the rest of the evening, until we go to Ministry of Sound. We met up with another gap student, and his girlfriend, then headed to Ministry. It took us a while to find it, but it was so awesome when we got there. The music, the crowd, everything :) Omg. Totally a night to remember. I got back to Borough around 3AM? Then hit the bar again, and saw a few friends that I met, and since it was my last night in London, they paid for quite a few of my drinks. Haha. Ah love them. Anyways, got back to my hostel even later, and got to sleep in for a little bit until my taxi came to take me to Kings Cross, where I headed back to Hunstanton on that afternoon.

London night life

Sorry, I haven't blogged in a while. I've been out most of the time during the day and out all night, so I'll probably blog a better blog when I'm back in Hunstanton. :) x

18th-20th February

It’s currently 8:03pm, and I have just checked into St Christopher’s Inn, the Village. This was a different one compared to the one I went to a few weeks ago. I’m in a mixed room tonight, of 14 beds, consisting of girls and guys. It’s quite interesting actually, as soon as I walked in, a Spanish guy, named John greeted me, asked me where I was from etc. He comes from Spain but he’s come to live in London. So that was pretty good. I left school around 3:30pm this afternoon, and have arrived in this hostel since 20 to 8. Though I’m checking out tomorrow, I’m moving into a private dorm with my family friend – Den. I’m waiting for her arrival sometime tonight, although I think we’re just going to head to bed early as we need to be at Westminister – London County Hotel tomorrow to get picked up on the tour to head to Stonehenge, Windsor and Bath. We’re also going on a night tour of London on an open bus (I think it is), so I don’t expect us to be back at the hostel quite early. I guess that’s pretty much it really, well for now. I’m only typing this up in a word document so that I can publish it in a massive post when I head back to Hunstanton, and so that it may be easier to recall events and locations that I’ve been to, instead of having to think so much when I get back and having to write a blog about various things that happened on different days – I know that will confuse me heaps.

~~

It’s now 7.26AM, Sunday morning, the20th of February 2011. I have so much to say already.

On Friday night, I met two Australians from Manly, that are engaged, and are travelling Europe for six months – pretty much like gypsies (as they would call it). It was good talking to them, they gave me plenty of ideas, and tips on how to save whilst travelling. They were so nice, and the nice thing about them was that they aren’t those couples that give out a PDA all the time while they’re around others. So yeah, I was literally talking to them for four hours in the dorm, while I was waiting for Dane. She arrived at the London Bridge tube station around 11pm, so I walked to pick her up and bring us both back to the hostel. We woke up around 5AM, to get ready, and get out by 6.30AM, arrived at Westminister tube station just a few minutes before 7AM. We had coffee and breakfast at Cafe Nero, just in front of Big Ben, overlooking Westminister Abbey, and the London Eye. Then we headed to London County Marriot Hall, where we were picked up by the hotel services to take us to the tour of ‘Windsor, Stonehenge and Bath’. We got on the bus around 8.45am, and headed off to Windsor, which was our first stop. It took longer than expected because of traffic, and the traffic was due to the Queen being around town, heading towards Windsor. Ahha. Oh, and I also learnt that the J.K Rowling is the richest woman in England, according to the ‘rich list’ they publish annually, and that the Queen is ‘only’ 253rd in the line of the rich list. We explored Windsor Castle, took many photos. Unfortunately, because it’s ‘Royal property’ we weren’t allowed to take photos inside the castle itself, so Dane and I went out earlier than the others to take photos outside. After that, we headed to Stonehenge, which was a little bit of a trek, because it took an hour to get there, but we stopped over for lunch on the way. Stonehenge is actually a mystery, and they cannot track down on how it actually came to place because the ancestors never left anything behind. Apparently, it came together during the times when the Egyptians were building pyramids, but unlike the Egyptians, who left hieroglyphics for those archaeologists, the English didn’t leave anything behind. And the rocks that were there, there are 30 of them, and they start from under the earth, apparently come from the north (Scotland) or the west (Wales) – not so sure on that one. But it would’ve taken then centuries to arrange the stones like that. And it was planned, because it’s perfect for the sun to shine just in the middle of the circle. People think that those who put it together those many years ago were worshippers of the sun and the moon. But it all still remains a mystery. We didn’t stay in Stonehenge for too long, because we were a little behind schedule, so we quickly headed over to Bath. And passing by the villages on the way there, oh my gawd, it was just absolutely amazing! A village isn’t a village, unless it has a pub and a church. Margot, our tour guide told us that pubs originally started back in the day in villages. Because the next village was a couple of hundred miles away, men who had work wanted a place to ‘chill’ at over night. So there were people who gave out a free room in their house to the public. They didn’t know what to call it, but because the brewers were giving them alcohol to sell, they needed something for the business, so basically, PUB comes from the word PUBLIC. It was for those people who couldn’t read very well, so hence, instead of saying ‘bed and breakfast’, etc, it was called the PUB. Bath was our last place of visit. I could’ve literally fainted when we got off the bus. It was just LITERALLY that amazingly, heavenly. I don’t even think words are worthy of describing it. It was just.... omggggggg...... and I’m being serious. The Roman Baths were just so nice, the hot baths, and springs. It was so beautiful, and I’m being legit. The shops there were really pretty as well, and the architecture, omg, don’t even start me. It was just built so... so beautifully, and as corny as that sounds, it’s a ‘you got to be there moment in order for you to understand it’ kinda moment. After Bath, we headed back into London, where we were supposed to go on a night tour of London, but the stupid bus company had to cancel because of the traffic congestions and something about the bus. So I was pretty angry, although sweet talking the manager was alright, he said he’d give me a refund. He thought I was English, and refused to give me one. I said I was from Australia and all that kinda thing, but he thought that I’ve been living in England. Omg, what a confusing man. So instead of that little drama, Dane and I headed to Piccadilly to find something to eat. We chose pizza hut because it was literally the first restaurant we saw, and by this time of night, we were both hungry. We had pizza and nachos. And I’m honestly loving how everything is so cheap, even when you do convert it back to the Australian dollar, it’s still cheap. After dinner, around 11pm, we hit the nightlife of London, walked around Piccadilly Circus, and into many of the shops that were still opened. We finally found where China Town was. And it is an actually town, unlike the China town alley in Sydney. Walked around practically anywhere we could walk to and from. The national galleries looked so nice, it was like the State Library of New South Wales, except probably 20 times bigger. It’s still soaking into me, the fact that I’m actually here. I’m still pinching myself in the morning, wondering if this is really true. But it’s reality, and I’m loving it. We got onto the 1.40AM bus from Trafalgar Square, and headed to London Bridge, where we literally just crashed on the bed and slept. It was good to have a private room for last night, it was just Dane and I, so the privacy was good, instead of having 8 or 14 other people around. So yeah, basically, now this brings me to where I am now. It’s now 8:04am, and check out time is at 10am, so I should really be getting packed to go to another dorm later on.

Lovely gestures

Apologizing

A little girl ran up to my this morning while I was on playtime duty and started pouring her eyes out with tears, asked for a cuddle. So I sat down with her by the bench, calmed her down a little and asked what was wrong. She told me that she told one of the other teachers a lie, and that she's crying because she didn't want to get in trouble at home. So to compromise with her, I told her that I'd take her into the classroom when playtime finishes so that she can apologize to the teacher. Her face was strawberry red, literally. So we walk in and apologized. Everything was a-okay.

I miss having the days when saying 'sorry' and not doing it again was enough to make everything better again. But a lot of people have depreciated the meaning of it, and now we've got to work for the trust again. Oh wells, to me, I guess that apologizing doesn't always mean that you are wrong and the other person is right. It just means that you value your relationship/friendship over your ego. And this girl is a living example of that. So I thank her for it.

Leave Australia alone

First Queensland, then Victoria, now the Territory and the West...

Face painting

I cropped out the other girl for privacy reasons.
But anyways, one of the 9 year old girls who is boarding tonight chose to face paint for activities, so she made me into a ladybird. ahaah. And we made her into a little devil with fire all over her face. Quite a challenge actually. But it was fun!

Blogging before bedtime

- all photos taken with my samsung digital camera -

The two books that I'm currently reading right now.

----

The valentine's day card that one of my closest friends - Josel mailed me. I was so excited this morning when I found it in my pigeon hole! So thank you for that 'sel, totally appreciate it heaps! Thank you !

---

A girl named Molly gave this to me this morning.

---

As I said in my previous blog, I had a very good valentine's day this year.
But I guess that I'm blogging once again to just kinda get a few things off my chest. It's not so negative, but I just need somewhere where I can just spill the beans. I think it was a few blogs ago, though it was a recent blog, I mentioned that I can kinda feel that I'm drifting away from so many people back home. And the quote:
"Sometimes it's better to hang onto the people that seem to care about you more than the people you try to care for."
just seems to make me contemplate more and more. In all honesty, I know that I take a lot of risks in my life, many in which may not be the right ones, or ones that just simply break me into pieces in the end, but in all.. they make me stronger as a person - no matter what it was. But when it comes to friendships... I admit, it's one of my weaknesses, losing a good friend because of mistakes made, or just simply drifting from them because of distance and time. And to what certain extent can we be saying "If they were really true friends, they would be here right now" kind of thing? Because we just can't. True friendships endure all pains, whether they be separation, fights, or just simply having to make time and effort in seeing/communicating with one another. I can truthfully say that I do care for a lot of people now more than I have ever cared for others before. But I guess I've learnt that it's true what they say.. you don't know what you've got until it's gone. Took me a long time to learn, but I've realized the true meaning of appreciation. And it's more to it than just saying 'thank you'. Even though I am literally more than 11,000 miles away from home, I still do wonder what my friends are up to, how they're going. Though it does make me miss everyone a lot more when I see photos, or find out things that I'm missing out on. It's just turned me off from using facebook for a while now.

What I also love is having to deal and sort out all the issues in the playground. Not that I love the fact that kids are going through 'rough times', but just learning from them, and knowing that everything isn't always as bad as it seems. I mean, two kids will have a huge fight, run up to me, yell and scream their side of the story, but then when I tell the both of them to calm down, and that it would be a wise decision to just stop, walk away, and find someone else to play with, they immediately have a smile on their face, skip/run away as if nothing ever happened. Or when a child from reception (kindergarten) runs up to me, with tears flowing down their face, I ask them what's the matter? And they just pour their eyes out saying "I want mummy" or "I want daddy", but all they really want in the end is a little cuddle, and it makes everything alright again. I honestly, as in wholeheartedly miss the innocence. Ignorance is bliss. And in reality, the older generation of the world just don't really seem to see it, or are just blind to the fact that not everything is as bad as it seems.

Independence - It amazes me how independent most of these children are. From the age of 7, they can literally live life without having to depend on anyone else for that matter. They can do the washing, are very good at managing their time - in terms of studying and homework and such. And mind you, I'm talking about 7 - 13 year olds. Honestly kinda makes me feel sorry for those I know that aren't so good with that kinda thing, and are 18 year olds already. (This isn't pointed out to any friends in particular - just people I know, but aren't friends with). So yep, I've learnt a lot since I've been here. And I'm really keen on getting my P-plates as soon as I get back in Australia, after I do a whole tour of Australia and a Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb. Honestly it embarrasses me, when I tell people that I'm from Sydney but I haven't done a bridge climb before. So yeah, that's pretty much on the top of my to-do list as soon as I get back.

I think that's all I've got to say for tonight. My head feels a whole lot lighter since I've been writing this blog, so that's on a positive note. I'll keep in touch and updated with this blog later! :)

Gratitude

Valentine's Day

Although I told myself that I wouldn't really celebrate Valentine's day this year.. I've learnt an important lesson today. The boys came up to me this morning, asking if I have a boyfriend back home. I chuckled a little and told them that I don't. One of them hugged me and said "Happy Valentine's Day Miss Argal! You don't need a man to make you happy, because you're a nice lady! And also, love is all around... you don't need to be romantic" And he ran off with a bright red face. I laughed to myself, and thought it was weird, but then.. what he said is true. I know I'm not ready or looking for a relationship. I still have the world to see and explore. I don't want to have to change or even settle for a second. I want to be able to feel like a better version of myself when I do find the right man. And whether it works out or not, I'll embrace the change and the challenge of even standing where I am. And really, in all honesty... you don't need a special day to show the one you love that you love them with cards, chocolates and flowers.. when you should be able to do that everyday. It's not really my kinda thing this day. But I'll accept it anyway. Love is all around us, in our friendships, relationships and family. That no matter how broken down they are, there was something there from the beginning that bought two people together. And nobody can change that, not you, not I. So Happy Valentine's Day everyone, whether you celebrate it or not, whether you are single or taken, there will always be someone out there who loves you for who you are - no matter what. And mind you, being single these days is a gift - well for me anyway. Appreciate it while you can ~ :)

Bubble baths

After such a long day of doing chores, cleaning, cooking, washing and what not. A good two hour milk/bubble bath did some good. Have to admit, I started the morning a bit moody, I think I just felt a little homesick, but I did what I could to make myself busy, and the feeling disappeared. I was talking to the other gap student whom I'm living with. I guess we both feel like we're drifting away from so many friends back home. And it's because we can't just spend all mornings or all weekends on skype and facebook all the time. It just wastes the day, being on the internet all the time. Though it makes me sad, to know that I'm not as close to certain people anymore, I guess that's how life is. Nothing is ever truly permanent, with the exception to those friendships who endure all differences, whether they be distance or time. I just hope that everyone's ok back home. So don't worry about me, I'm happy where I am... halfway across the world :):) xx

Appreciation

Showing gratitude and appreciation for other makes everything worthwhile. Who wouldn't be pleased to know that someone is thankful for what you've done for them? Honestly, I wasn't that kind of person before, but I guess that being here - it's taught me that it comes a long way, to be thankful for everything that we have. The kids that go to school here are probably the richest kids ever, they get everything, but yet they're not stuck up and think that they're all that just because they own big houses, and get basically everything they want. I love the atmosphere of this school, I love being a part of it. And to me, they've honestly become like a second family. It's only been one month and three days since I've been here, and it's just absolutely amazing. Even though, I'm a teacher to them, they have taught me more of the important lessons in life.

This week

I hope that I get by this week fast.
I've so so many things planned for London next week, and I'm totally looking forward to it :):)!

Devo

Ah, Den can't come with me to Bath/Windsor/Stonehenge, cos she's got work, so I'll get to see her at night, although she's coming on the night tour with me which is pretty good. So I guess it'll just be an adventure for me to go on my own! :) ahah, yes I'm excited.

But I'm pretty devo that I couldn't see Julian this weekend. I should've just went this weekend instead of last. Arghh. Oh wells, :( xx

Chill weekend

Last night, just sat by the television and watched movies. My roommate (other gap student) went out to babysit her family friends. So I was at the boarding house by myself. It was actually quite good, although I had to do lock up by myself (locking up all the doors in the school/switching the lights off and such) was quite scary, but I guess that the more I do it, the more it'll just be a habit.

And today, caught up with a few friends - Jess, Max, Marcus, Nathan and Jana. Then went grocery shopping with Mrs C, then put up photos on my wall! Which I'll upload later on facebook.

Next week, on Friday afternoon, I'm heading back down to London for the half term break. I'm going to be seeing a family friend - Den, and we'll be going to Stonehenge, Bath and Windsor Castle, and going on a little adventure to see London by night - the tourist attractions. We'll also be going shopping and what not during the following day. During the week I haven't made plans yet, but I don't plan to. Haha, last weekend when I went to London, nothing went according to plan, so this time, I 'plan' to just go wherever the wind takes me - literally. And I'm also going to go on a Harry Potter tour - which a tour guide takes us on a tour around London to all the places where Harry Potter was filmed. So I'm quite looking forward to that!

I bought a new digital camera from ebay. Although later on in the year, I'm going to buy another digital camera - the panasonic lumix ft2! Only because it's waterproof and will come to a good use in the Summer holidays!

I won't be online much next week, because I really don't plan on going on the internet while I'm on that holiday. So this may or may not be the last blog I post before then. :):) xx

Reflections

St Christopher's Inn Village Hostel.

Big Ben!

The "tube" underground railway.
It is absolutely amazing. It takes you to the next stop in just seconds, and in each stop, by the time you get to the station, and up the stairs and what not, it's a whole new atmosphere and environment. You could be at Oxford - shopping district one moment, and then at Westminister - Parliament houses the next. It's just so good. :):)
An aerial view of Westminister Abbey from the London Eye!

---------------

All photos taken by me.

--------------------------------

I can't believe that I've been here for a month already. Right now, it's the 10th of February - 8:59PM. And come to think of it, I've done a lot within a month - Visit Ely the medieval city, met and greet the Queen, be featured in a newspaper, go to London, London Eye, London Film Museum, clubbing, night life, pub crawl and shopping and many more things.

In a month, I've learned all the children's names which is pretty good! And I've managed to do quite a lot in the school! So I'm really happy here. I'm also heading down back to London next Friday, and will be staying there for a whole week! So I'll be doing a lot!! :):) And I am SOOOOOO EXCITEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD :D:D

:) xx

Trip to London

Headed down to London from Kings Lynn on Friday night.
Arrived in London around 8.30PM, checked into the hostel, and had a few drinks with my room mate, then later on met with her friend. Also met heaps of guys that night, so yeah it was pretty good. I went back to my hostel and left them for the night, got an hour sleep or so, then went out again. I went down the street to this club/pub/karaoke bar, where I met heaps of people and stuff.

Saturday - touristed around Westminister, London Film Museum and the London Eye, followed my a massive shopping spree on Oxford Street. Then later in the afternoon, I went back to London Bridge, checked into the hostel again, and got all dressed up for the pub crawl - which is like club/pub hopping - moving from club to club, VIP entries, and free drinks all night for just £10, so that was really good. Met a lot of new people, some from Australia, England, Spain, Brazil, Ireland, Scotland, Japan, Korea, and many more. So that was a really fun night!

Woke up on Sunday morning, and just walked around the street, then headed to Kings Cross ready to board the train back to Kings Lynn.

And at the moment, I'm in the ICT room at school. Half of my laptop charger got stolen from the hostel... So annoyed. but whatever, I ordered a new one from ebay which I should get really soon, hopefully tomorrow or the day after that. And I'm also looking into buying a digital camera, one of those handy pocket ones that are shock and water proof :):) xx

Cold + Asthma = the worst

I wasn't feeling too well yesterday, but I know that if I stayed in bed all day, I would've gotten more sick than I already was. So I simply braved up the sickness, and got on with the day. Which I guess wasn't such a good decision seeing as after playing hide & seek and murder in the dark with the boarders last night, I got even more sick, and went to bed feeling like absolute crap! Woke up this morning feeling worse. So the teacher in charge of the boarders told me to stay in bed, drink lemon and take a few capsules. Though I've looked into them and found that I'll have reactions because I'm asthmatic. So right now, I'm sitting in the common room with a huge blanket around me!

4 more days!

Only four more days until I head down to London.
Today went by pretty fast, at least I think it did.
Overall a cold, yet long but short day.
Excited that Gracey gave us chocos for tuck this evening!
And also got to play hide and seek for prep activities!
Hope everyone back home is doing great :) xo
